New ultrasound measuring system for sludge level monitoring

March 2001 Level Measurement & Control

Process measurement specialist Endress+Hauser has released a cost-effective sludge layer detection measuring system comprising of the CUM750 transmitter and CUS70 ultrasound-measuring sensor. The new system offers an efficient and economical method of continuously monitoring the separation and transition zones of the clarification and settling phases of a sludge layer in the treatment of wastewater, water purification and in the chemical industry, where suspensions can be separated into their solid and liquid components by sedimentation.

The measurement system detects and follows the sludge layer in primary clarifiers and thickeners, and accurately tracks and measures the sludge layer as it moves in the thickener. The product defines separation layers independently and tracks them, as it is able to evaluate received signal strengths independently.

The system defines a region - or gate - above and below the separation zone, with signal evaluation only taking place in this defined region. The gate wanders within the separation zone, making smoothing algorithms unnecessary. The CUM750 transmitter is especially designed in a closed field housing with a dirt-proof membrane keyboard for set-up and calibration in harsh outdoor conditions. The sensor is made of epoxy resin with all sensor electronics encapsulated for IP68 protection. The system is available with an ultrasound IP68 CUS70 sensor with a 6 m cable, four relays freely configurable as standard, and an optional 32 bit 4-channel transmitter that allows the user to manage four clarifier/thickeners simultaneously, which has a significant saving over single channel versions. The product has no moving parts, which allows the instrument to be virtually main-tenance free. Only periodic cleaning of the sensor is required to keep the signal emission clear, although automatic sensor cleaning with a self-priming pump is available as an option.
