Custody pulsed transfer mm-level radar a world-first
March 2001
Level Measurement & Control
Claiming a world first, Endress+Hauser (a leading instrumentation specialist) has launched a pulse radar level meter capable of measuring levels accurately to within 1 mm. The Micropilot S tank level gauge is expected to become an effective door opener for the company, especially into the local petrochemical industry. Endress+Hauser's confidence is based not only on the unprecedented accuracy of the product, but also the fact that it has been PTB approved. This means that it meets all requirements of a custody transfer level radar and has been certified to be accurate enough for use in commercial petrochemical distribution facilities.
Together with the newly launched Micropilot M, the Micropilot S introduces a new era of 'echo view' or time-of-flight (ToF) platforms for the company's measuring instruments. A free addition to the product, ToF tools for remote operation and configuration allow graphical support, on-line help functionality, a unique envelope curve display, event-driven diagnostics and communication via HART, PA and service adapters. These features contribute to improved ease-of-use, easier integration, reduction of faults and enhanced maintenance.
Beside the tank gauging market, where an integrated network of Micropilot S radars could be used for volume measurement, the product also offers new opportunities for high precision standalone level measurements, such as wineries and distilleries, where its significantly lower common list price will also make it an economic alternative. The option of planar and parabolic antenna will further unlock application possibilities in larger measurement ranges of up to 40 m. For applications in stilling wells, a special planar antenna that ignores build-up has been developed. This can be used as a retrofit of mechanical systems without additional expense, even in tapered stilling wells.
Technicians will also be pleased to hear that a 24 V loop power system can be employed, negating the need for 220 or 110 V power supplies to the instrument. The company expects an increase in radar level gauge sales in 2001 of up to 20%, based on the success of the Micropilot.
