Geographically distributed scada

Wonderware’s Geo-SCADA software solutions offer a powerful industrial information infrastructure that enhance power industry assets. The systems provide a flexible, maintainable and secure software platform for Geo-SCADA environments.

The solutions are built on and integrated with a single, open and scalable software architecture that can connect to virtually any automation system, remote terminal unit (RTU), intelligent electronic device (IED), programmable logic controller (PLC), database, historian or business system in use today. The open nature of this platform enables users to expand their existing systems without having to buy new hardware or control systems.

Deployed widely in the power generation and distribution industries, Wonderware solutions help utility planners and operators make better decisions, manage specific problems in realtime and access accurate information on business systems. Engineering productivity is also enhanced since devices and systems used throughout the Geo-SCADA environment can be modelled as object templates. This reduces the time required to add additional equipment and simplifies maintenance.

“The European Commission has identified key factors that challenge the development of smart grids in the electrical sector including market deregulation, Pan-European electrical networks, centralised and distributed generation, upgrading of existing grids and environmental policies,” said Eduardo Ballina, Wonderware Geo-SCADA business manager. “With Wonderware’s open and scalable Geo-SCADA solutions, companies no longer have to be locked into proprietary systems that are difficult to maintain and upgrade. The Geo-SCADA system provides the flexibility to grow with changing customer and industry requirements.”

“Large utility companies such as Eskom with their extensive national networks that reach into adjacent countries can benefit from this Geo-SCADA information infrastructure,” says Justin Tweedie, MD of Wonderware Southern Africa. “By virtue of their distributed nature, such organisations have accumulated many diverse and disparate industrial automation systems over the years and a major priority is to safeguard these existing investments while providing a growth path that includes easier system maintenance and enhancement.”
