Saab Marine Electronics joins Fisher-Rosemount

March 2001 News

In a deal set to add significant expertise in level instrumentation to existing leadership in pressure and temperature instrumentation, Fisher-Rosemount, the process management division of Emerson, has announced the acquisition of Saab Marine Electronics AB, a world leader in radar level gauging.

Saab Marine Electronics, formerly a subsidiary of Saab AB, will become the level instrumentation centre of excellence for Minneapolis-based Rosemount, a world-leading pressure, temperature and level measurement division of Fisher-Rosemount.

Radar is the fastest growing level measurement technology because of radar products' high accuracy, reliability, and ability to withstand difficult process conditions. It is used aboard marine vessels as well as in land-based tanks at refineries, terminals, and chemical plants.

"Adding Saab Marine Electronics to our Rosemount family of instrumentation solutions gives us a leading position in the rapidly growing land-based radar level gauging markets, strengthening an important component of our Plantweb field-based architecture offering," said John Berra, President of Fisher-Rosemount and Emerson Executive Vice President. "It is one of the many ways we are helping customers improve measurement and control while optimising return on their automation assets."

"In addition to enhancing both companies' existing level products, including G3, Rex, Pro Loop Radar, Apex, Sentry and HTG, we will be able to leverage Saab's radar technologies with Rosemount's capabilities in Fieldbus and low-power instrumentation to deliver exciting new level measurement products to our customers," explained Rosemount President Ed Monser.

"This also represents a major move for Fisher-Rosemount into the marine market," Monser added. "Saab Marine Electronics takes a solutions approach to its marine customers needs and it can now provide a more comprehensive solution by offering a wide variety of Fisher-Rosemount products."

"Joining Fisher-Rosemount is an important step in our growth strategy," said Kurt Isaksson, President of Saab Marine Electronics. "Both companies have a high level of commitment to customer value and provide highly reliable products and solutions. Fisher-Rosemount's strong process market channel will supplement our excellent inventory and marine channels. Also, Fisher-Rosemount has advanced technology, enabling us to bring additional products to new and existing markets, further increasing our ability to serve in the off-shore and on-shore radar level markets."

The deal is subject to approval by the relevant authorities.
