SA company secures hydropower plant contract in Mozambique

March 2001 News

Johannesburg's Amandla Energy Ventures has been selected to develop and build a 20 MW hydropower plant which will be the sole electricity provider for the Mozambique-based Manges de Manica project. The Manges de Manica project, backed by a European agricultural and community development consortium, will produce and market sub-tropical fruit - predominantly mangoes - for export markets.

Situated in Mozambique's Manica province, the project will create a projected 670 permanent job opportunities and will provide employment for 8000 farmworkers and 2000 daily seasonal workers. The electricity needs of the project will be driven by a comprehensive infrastructure which includes irrigation systems, factories for mango and fruit products, a workshop, farming units to provide food for on-site shops serving personnel, the shops themselves and a clinic and housing for senior staff.

"We are very pleased to have been selected by Manges de Manica to develop the hydropower plant for the Manica facility," said Christopher Maloney, Chairman and Chief Executive of Amandla International, the parent of Amandla Energy Ventures. "This 20 MW plant is the first of a number of power projects being discussed with Manges de Manica and we are looking forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship as we team up together in southern Africa."

"We are delighted to have Amandla as our partner building the hydropower plant for Manges de Manica," said a spokesman for the consortium backing the project. "Amandla is the right partner for this venture and we look forward to developing additional projects with them in the future."

Site feasibility work on the project is scheduled to begin in early April. The cost to build the 20 MW plant, including the electric transmission line, is estimated at approximately R200 000 000 and Amandla is currently in negotiations with GE Power Systems to supply the key hardware for the project.

According to Maloney, with the Manica project in place as its anchor customer, Amandla Energy Ventures is already exploring the possibility of expanding the size of the hydropower project by another 30 MW to provide power to Mozambique.
