ABB in South Africa, part of the global technology group, ABB, was a joint winner together with Toyota South Africa of the emPower 2000 national award for environmental care, the most prestigious sustainability award in the country.
ABB also received industry sector awards for both the environment and black economic empowerment (BEE). The company was also honoured as a finalist for its overall contribution towards sustainable development.
South Africa's emPower 2000 Awards, organised by the Professional Management Review, were presented recently in Johannesburg. The awards have been held for the past 11 years and are endorsed and supported by South Africa's leading political and business figures. Past recipients of the environmental care award are South Africa's top industrial and public companies, including Sasol, Total, Eskom, Umgeni Water, PPC, Shell South Africa and Trees for Africa.
ABB's environmental achievements this year include being the first in its sector to obtain two ISO 14001 listings, one of which was attained by its joint venture company, ABB Karebo Manufacturers, a supplier of high voltage switchgear - the first black economic empowerment company in the country to achieve the ISO 14001 listing.
ABB's contributed to black economic empowerment by establishing three joint ventures that support access by black people to the mainstream economy. These companies include ABB Karebo Manufacturers, ABB Kutlwanong, and Desta Power Matla.
The emPower 2000 Awards function was attended by two cabinet ministers, namely Dr Zola Skweyiya, Minister for Welfare and Population Development and Dullah Omar, Minister of Transport, both of whom recognised and praised the award winners for their outstanding contribution towards empowering previously disadvantaged communities. Dr Skweyiya applauded the winners for their contribution towards a market society "with a face and a heart".
Carlos Pone, CEO, ABB in South Africa, said the awards honoured the contribution of all the company's employees towards being recognised as a good corporate citizen. "In South Africa we have truly practiced the ABB philosophy of diversity and sustainability towards the economy, society and the environment."
