Citect automates Smokey Hills mine

GRD Minproc, a leading engineering construction business, has been tasked by Phokataba Platinum – a subsidiary of Platinum Australia Limited – to design and construct a platinum concentrator plant on the eastern limb of the Bushveld complex in Limpopo province.
The company has appointed Citect, a wholly owned subsidiary of Schneider Electric, to design, engineer, commission and document a complete automation control system that will meet the process control requirements over the expected seven-year operational life of the mine.
Citect and Schneider Electric will deliver a combined automation solution, comprising two Modicon Premium PLCs and a VijeoCitect scada system, in order to achieve a cost effective design that maximises existing functionality. The project will be closely aligned to Citect’s professional services engineering standards, with components such as PLC cubicles and fibre optic network infrastructure being installed and tested by Citect partners under the leadership of the Citect project manager.
“This initiative is a great example of the combined expertise of Citect, Schneider Electric and our local partners in tailoring a comprehensive and consolidated solution for our customers,” says Citect South Africa managing director, Wilhelm Swart.
Construction, software development and engineering commenced at the end of February 2008 and commissioning is planned to begin at the start of June 2008.
