A reliable and flexible solution for the mining and mineral sector.

Strong demand from rapidly developing economies around the world coupled with pressure on achieving resource efficiencies, has resulted in a mining and minerals processing boom in recent years.

As the leading industrialised country on the continent, South Africa has benefited from this growth with strong investment from corporations such as Mittal Steel, BHP Billiton, Xstrata and Anglo America heading the list. A Frost & Sullivan 2007 study entitled 'Automation and control solutions in the southern African metal and mining industry', suggests that sustained high demand for minerals and metals specifically in China and India over the past five years, has triggered this renewed interest in the African market.

In light of the current resources demand, companies are increasingly focused on maximising efficiencies in order to reap the benefits of this positive economic trend. Combine this with significant establishment and maintenance costs often associated with the installation of an automation control system, and there is heightened demand for superior quality, scalable and stable products offering longevity and value-added service offerings. Improved efficiency, reduced operation costs, more comprehensive and timely data and replacement of ageing control systems have also been pinpointed as the key purchase drivers within the mining and minerals sector.

CitectSCADA meets these demands by offering a range of reliable and highly flexible solutions with centralised visibility and control. With increased demand on systems, CitectSCADA now offers advanced clustering technology supporting for expansion requirements with the addition of clients and enhanced data accessibility. In delivering a powerful integrated reporting and decision-analysis solution, CitectSCADA Reports has recently been enhanced to include the OPC historical data access (HDA) Server, providing a simple and cost-effective solution that enables interoperability with existing systems and providing an integrated scada and manufacturing execution system (MES) solution.

Additionally, in meeting the need for upgrading ageing control systems and capitalising on the latest technology, a reliable and cost effective upgrade path is now more essential than ever. Unlike other legacy systems, Citect ensures on-going support services with proven upgrade paths. Using migration tools such as Switch2Citect, system migration from a legacy system becomes seamless and enhanced functionality is delivered with minimal configuration.

“Within the mining and minerals sector there is a need for asset optimisation and benchmarking, better energy, water, mass and metal balancing, as well as inventory management and genealogy tracking. Citect meets this challenge with its solutions integrating seamlessly with each other and third party products such as SAP, LIMS, and Scales, thus offering a simple end-to-end solution for our customers”, said Wilhelm Swart, Citect South Africa’s managing director.

Swart added, “With commodity prices and demand for minerals from developed countries and emerging economies set to remain high for the coming years, Citect is well positioned to utilise our global expertise in this sector, in continuing to deliver innovative solutions for our customers.”
