Automatic format adjustment

April 2008 Motion Control & Drives

With the differentiated Hiperdrive portfolio, Sick Stegmann has actively taken up the automation trend of format adjustment to measure. One of the advantages is fast and precise adjustment of positioning values. The range includes a wide variety of choice to cater for power output and measurement process, providing economical procurement of solutions that meet user requirements.

Precision, repeat accuracy and time savings are important arguments for converting from manual adjustment via hand wheels to automatic Hiperdrives
Precision, repeat accuracy and time savings are important arguments for converting from manual adjustment via hand wheels to automatic Hiperdrives

Hiperdrive (highly integrated performance drive) is a range of integrated positioning drives for automatic format adjustment, accommodating the motor, drive and measuring system, as well as the control electronics in one compact housing. The goal is to provide solution-oriented and economical control. Interchangeable functionality allows users to tailor their selections to meet specific needs without the need to purchase over specified products. The application demands made of the positioning drives involve, among other things, machine-specific features such as spindle inclination or traversing path, the desired power output of the drive, the necessary resolution, selection of the measurement system and ease of use during machine set-up and operation. This adds up to the flexibility needed to meet user requirements for format adjustment to measure.

The units are available with output power ratings of 25, 30, 35 or 45 W. The 30 W and 45 W versions offer a self retention feature. This means the drive axle cannot be turned while in an inactive state thus preserving the drives position while the machine is switched off. The 25 W and 35 W versions are not designed for self-locking.

Resolution and operating convenience are made to measure. Regardless of output and stopping moment, all Hiperdrive positioning drives are available in different models from 16 to 1024 intervals per revolution and from 64 to 4096 resolvable revolutions. Depending on the version, jog buttons are integrated for manual electronic adjustment, for instance, to facilitate the setting of start-up positions.

With the different variant types, the automatic positioning drives permit accurate format adjustment made to measure for applications in packaging facilities, tyre production, sintering presses, beverage bottling and printing presses.
