Local company, OMSA Valves & Instrumentation, has just delivered two record-breaking butterfly control valves to the resurgent copper industry in Zambia. Providing valves in exotic materials is not unusual for OMSA but at 2500 mm diameter they are the largest valves it has ever supplied.
The contract between OMSA and SMS Demag in Johannesburg was for the supply of the valves complete with actuators and positioners to a smelter in Zambia. The order was placed on InterApp, OMSA's suppliers in Switzerland, and manufacture was carried out at InterApp's subsidiary in Poland. Delivery was made to the port of Hamburg for transport to the Zambian copper belt.
The valve type chosen was the Saturnia which is a low leakage, metal seated damper valve for both on-off and regulating service, used mainly for exhaust gas cleaning and desulphurisation applications up to 650°C. Although outside the normal range of 200-2000 mm diameter, and utilising more resistant materials than usual, the company managed to extend their production capabilities to meet a tight delivery schedule which dovetailed with the rest of the project.

The main materials of construction were special stainless steels - 316Ti for the body and shaft of the valve, and 309 for the disc. The total mass of each valve and actuator assembly is approximately 1¾ tons.
