Jamesbury valves put the seal on chlorine

February 2008 Valves, Actuators & Pump Control

Metso Automation has successfully supplied more than 150 units of Jamesbury flanged ball valves to BASF Shanghai Polyurethane Company. The valves are being used primarily in chlorine gas applications in TDI/TDA plants. All the valves were supplied with Emission-Pak stem sealing, which meets the stringent 'Category M' service requirements. When coupled with Emission-Pak stem packing, the flanged ball valves meet BASF's extremely low stem-emission requirements. In recent years, the demands of many large organisations have become increasingly stringent for reduced stem leakage in order to contribute to both safety and environmental pollution issues. Jamesbury valves conform to the recommended specifications and standards of the Institute of Chlorine, Inc. USA. The emission containment of Jamesbury meets ISO 15848 or EPA Method 21 requirements, which include actual valve cycling (dynamic) tests in the factory for up to 100 000 cycles.

What is Emission-Pak?

The Emission-Pak provides a simple and economical method of meeting global emissions standards including ISO 15848. It is supplied as a factory-mounted valve assembly. The Emission-Pak has a double-packed, live loaded, V-ring stem-seal design, which utilises stacked and guided spring washers to maintain a constant packing force without over compression. It is mounted on the valve and retained by a bolt pattern that requires low clamping force to secure it to the valve bonnet. A second bolt pattern allows easy actuator installation for automated operation without disturbing any pressure-retaining bolts. A special graphite gasket on the mounting face of the Emission-Pak maintains a leak-free joint at the valve bonnet, and assures that a Fire-Tite valve retains its fire-tested rating.

The Emission-Pak is suitable for use in temperature ranges from -73 to +260°C in stainless steel, and from -29 to +260°C in carbon steel.
