A durable valve control system capable of operating in the harsh environment of a polymer production facility was needed. Typically the system would be required to endure noise and vibration, as well as exposure to glutinous materials and periodic washing with solvents. The priority was to identify a range of actuators suited to the conditions and usable for both new installation as well as retrofits.
Solution
TopWorx Valvetop discrete valve controllers were ultimately chosen by the plant engineers. The decision was motivated on the basis of combined bus networking, pilot valve, and position sensors - available in a globally certified explosion-proof enclosure, capable of interfacing with existing automated valve packages. The upgrade comprised the installation of 400 Valvetop controllers with traditional switches on one production line and 400 controllers with Foundation Fieldbus on a second. The project manager noted that "Foundation Fieldbus was chosen because the wiring installation was faster, easier, and less expensive."
Conclusions
The project manager relayed that he was pleased with the decision to install TopWorx Valvetop discrete valve controllers, which have operated reliably under the most arduous conditions. He noted, "The installation went smoothly, substantial cost saving was achieved and Foundation Fieldbus has positioned us well for future expansion."
