Smart HART pneumatic rotary positioner

November 2007 Pneumatics & Hydraulics

Following process industry requests for a smart positioner with both remote control and monitoring capabilities, engineers from pneumatic technology company SMC, have met the challenge with their latest Series IP8101 rotary type positioner. Designed to provide both remote control monitoring and automatic calibration, the positioner can be simply set with any zero/span adjustment at the touch of a button and without the need for a specialist operator. This provides both time and cost savings.

When combined with a HART protocol interface, both remote control and monitoring are possible and with its monitor output including software alarm, the opening and closing of an actuator can be checked without the need for visual on-site confirmation. The IP8101 is controlled by a conventional dual wire input of 4 to 20 mA and no additional power supply is required. With a variety of parameter setting functions and displayable control condition, positioning, deviation and input values are clearly displayed on an easy to see LCD. The smart positioner is also available in an intrinsically safe explosion protection type model and the complete range is fully interchangeable with SMCs existing IP8100 mounting options.
