Liquid iron is transported in rail vessels called torpedoes. These oversized rail trucks consist of a cylindrical steel shell that is insulated with refractory bricking. Liquid iron is poured into them and transported to BOF furnaces. As the torpedo is not cooled but is subjected to constant vibration, thermal shock, sloshing and pour abrasion from the heavy iron, the refractory material is prone to stress. By installing automatic inspection systems using thermal cameras, each torpedo is monitored at each filling process to check for changes in its thermal pattern. These changes indicate impending failure in the refractory material before a burn through occurs.
