The Omniterm two-wire transmitter manufactured by Omniflex has SABS certification for use as a barrier in hazardous area installations, effectively meaning that one product now does the job of two: a standard two-wire transmitter plus an IS barrier. The implications are that huge savings are made on overall cost, panel space and installation time are reduced and system reliability is improved owing to fewer components in the loop.
The Omniflex TWTx (two-wire transmitter) eliminates the need for a barrier between the safe and hazardous areas as it is certified by the SABS for Ex ib operation. Available in thermocouple, RTD, mV and mA versions, the transmitters are widely used in both intrinsically safe and nonintrinsically safe applications. In particular, the petrochemical industry has been a ready market for the products now that the design is both a two-wire transmitter and a barrier.
The two-wire transmitter measures the process signal, provides 1500 V r.m.s. isolation and outputs a 4 to 20 mA loop to the PLC, PC or DCS on the same pair of wires that is used to power the device. With an accuracy and repeatability of better than 0,1% and an RFI immunity with protection from 20 MHz to 1 GHz, the Omniterm TWTx range has numerous applications in diverse industries.
Measuring only 20 mm across, it can be screwed to a flat panel or mounted on a DIN rail with built-in snap connectors. All wiring is via two-part removable connectors for quick and easy field replacement, which will also allow a test probe to be inserted for in-circuit monitoring, without breaking the loop.
