Getting the measure of powders and granules

February 2001 Level Measurement & Control

Krohne is meeting the challenge of accurate level measurement in the bulk storage industry with its proven TDR (time domain reflectometry) level transmitter.

The measurement of powders and granules is notoriously difficult. Clogged, encrusted probes and dust-laden atmospheres have detrimental effects on most types of instrumentation which can result in measurements with limited accuracy and a high level of maintenance.

Krohne's BM100 TDR level transmitter, however, has proved to be an accurate and flexible device that is being increasingly specified where process operating conditions render conventional level sensing techniques unreliable, such as ultrasonic devices and capacitance probes. The BM100 is appropriate for plastic granules, hot polymide, flour, talcum powder, phosphate, cement and fly ash, etc.

The Bm100 is being used by leading cement producers worldwide, including Blue Circle, Vilger Cement and Ciment Lafarge. It is currently on trial with a leading cement company that is part of Europe's largest cement group. The company requires continuous accurate level measurement to ensure that the silos are not over-filled and to maintain a pressurised air space over the surface of the cement, which assists the emptying process.

When the silos were first built, motorised type dipping gauges were fitted to the silos, which operated on a 'dip on demand' basis. This required a high level of maintenance and also proved to be unreliable, due to the harsh environment and operating conditions.

The BM 100 has been installed and has been programmed to measure distance for a trial period. This will enable the digital, panel mounted, indicator to be compared against regular dips. If this proves to be accurate and reliable it will be set to display real volume.

Unaffected by clogging and encrustation, the level sensor offers high reliability and repeatability of ±1 mm for liquids and powders. It also has CENELEC certification for Zone 0 applications in liquids and Zone 10 approval for powders.
