SHE-Q software: streamlining control room operations

October 2007 SCADA/HMI

ApplyIT has released FlexiLOG 4.3, a significant enhancement to its suite of tools designed to manage safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ) in a manufacturing environment.

“FlexiLOG 4.3 builds on 10 years’ experience in control room environments,” says ApplyIT MD Gavin Halse, “and comprises a set of tools to streamline the dozens of routine activities process operators are faced with on a daily basis.”

Initially designed as a simple replacement for the operations logbook found in a control room, the toolbox is now a third-generation product that has evolved to cater for such processes as shift handover, process and technology investigations, ad hoc recording of process variables and many other essential day-to-day activities centred on production information.

The new software version adds highly flexible user-configurable templates with a powerful workflow capability. This combination allows the software to be used in numerous practical applications with simple configuration changes that do not require programming or specialised expertise. FlexiLOG is built on a database model that allows inherent relationships between different information entities (such as people, plants, equipment and work permits) to be maintained and presented in their full context at all stages of the manufacturing process.

Some of the practical applications of FlexiLOG of relevance to plant operations staff include:

* Front-end data capture tools for commercial processes such as purchase requisitions, delivery notes, stores requisitions and stock adjustments.

* In the area of quality, COA (certificates of analysis), sample registers, raw material quality measurements and instrument calibration data are all easily built into the system to meet the quality requirements of shift plant operations.

* Engineers benefit by using the system to record and approve plant modifications, design changes, trial runs, experimental programmes and more.

* Maintenance teams benefit by accommodating work requests in FlexiLOG, which integrates completely into ApplyIT’s OptiRUN product.

* Safety professionals benefit through site observations, risk assessments and safety audit information, all of which are easily configured and captured in the application.

* Waste and effluent registers, operating permits and other elements of ISO14000 can be managed and controlled using FlexiLOG in conjunction with ApplyIT’s SmartSURE application.

FlexiLOG has been completely rewritten to achieve underlying flexibility in the technology architecture and ease of deployment in any environment.

“We are very proud of the work done by our product development laboratories,” says Halse, “and we look forward to helping our customers derive higher levels of efficiency and effectiveness in their plants.”
