AS-i valve monitoring and control

February 2001 Valves, Actuators & Pump Control

Topworx (GO Switch), as a leader in on/off valve control, has recently launched its digital valve monitors/controllers which are available in either AS-i or DeviceNet platforms for rotary actuators.

These low-cost intelligent devices provide for live instrument diagnostics, while saving costs of installation and commissioning, as well as space-saving. Installation is simplified due to the only wiring requirement being a single two or four-wire cable for the device as well as peripheral sensors, thus eliminating costly cabling.

Using the Lumitech range of controllers, a wide range of industrial devices can be connected to PCs and PLCs, such as sensors, limit switches, valve manifolds, motor starters, actuators and drives, thereby providing easy networking, and remote management of devices. These units can be mounted directly to any NAMUR actuator, without requiring special brackets.

The AS-i controller can connect up to 31 devices, with the number of I/O points being 248. This unit also operates on 24 to 30 V d.c. and can easily gateway into most Fieldbus networks, including Profibus, DeviceNet, Modbus, Ethernet, etc. The AS-i controllers can also operate directly in hazardous areas (Class 1, Div.2 - Zone 2), provided that proper wiring practices are adhered to - ie conduit protection of cables. The DeviceNet controller can connect up to 64 devices, and eliminates the need for expensive gateways. It also supports numerous diagnostic functions, while operating on 11 to 30 V d.c.

All valve controllers include sealed bus communications, position sensors, solenoid valves, and terminations in a single module. These units are also corrosion and water-resistant.
