Adroit releases DBGen

August 2007 SCADA/HMI

In line with the company's objective to deliver solutions-focused products, Adroit Technologies announced the release of Database Generator, or DBGen for short. This market-driven application allows users to automatically generate an Adroit supervisory control and data acquisition (scada) database from various sources.

DBGen generates a database based on the output of various programmable logic controller (PLC) programming utilities and open standard formats such as OPC (OLE for process control).

Adroit's technical director, Mike Lamusse, motivates the product: "It is great to see some of the more progressive PLC manufacturers opening up their programming environments. This has allowed the independent scada vendors, such as Adroit, to really offer their customers a single point of configuration for their scada databases."

Initially motivated by a customer wishing to use Mitsubishi PLCs and the MXChange programming environment, the development inspired Adroit to go even further, creating an open architecture environment that supports various 'plug-ins' for third party vendors.

These plug-ins interrogate the vendor software/hardware and create a matching Adroit database which at a minimum will create the agents and their scanning configuration. Depending on the plug-in, DBGen can allow for the configuration of logging and alarming as well - saving both time and money.

DBGen enables the creation of templates and the use of such in the importing process. It is possible to create different templates for a single agent type as well as for scanning, alarming and logging. Once these templates have been configured, they can then be applied consistently and repeatedly to any configuration, where the plug-in allows.

The product contains plug-ins for the Mitsubishi MXChange and GX Developer, CSV (comma separated values) and OPC. Plug-ins for Mitsubishi's GX IEC and Siemens are currently under investigation and Adroit says that they will be added in the near future - depending on demand.

The product's intuitive interface allows users to manage a distributed system of PLCs and Adroit servers giving them a great deal of flexibility and control over their automation solution.

Dave Wibberley, managing director of Adroit Technologies adds: "We are looking forward to developing more plug-ins for the DBGen application and are constantly finding ways to better assist our SIs (systems integrators) and customers so as to drive down the total cost of ownership (TCO) of their solutions."
