Dual-function probe suits CIP applications

August 2007 Temperature Measurement

New in the Jumo 202759 series is an hygienic probe with both conductivity and temperature measurement outputs making it well-suited for use in CIP (clean in place) circuits in the beverage industry. The conductivity probe is fitted with a fast-response Pt1000 temperature sensor, and is made from Natur-PEEK, a special plastic used in medical technology.

There are three common methods for electrolytic conductivity measurement: conductive with 2-electrode cells, conductive with 4-electrode cells and non-contact inductive. None of these methods can totally replace the others. The optimum measuring method must be chosen to suit the specific application.

Instruments that operate via the inductive method are used for high conductivities, from about 100 μS/cm to 2000 mS/cm, and demonstrate their advantage when the medium being measured is highly contaminated or tends to form deposits. Inductive measurement is therefore ideal for the beverage industry in filling and CIP installations and in crate or barrel cleaning plants.

Since inductive conductivity sensors do not produce a normalised or standardised signal, the probes are primarily intended to be connected to the Jumo CTI-750 transmitter or the Jumo Aquis 500 Ci. The sensor can also be supplied in an OEM version, for users who build their own evaluation electronics.

The sensor is available with the hygienic process connections, such as a DN40/50 milk cone, clamp, Varivent, and SMS. An immersion version and threaded types will also be available in the near future.
