Two-wire temperature transmitter for hygienic applications

August 2007 Temperature Measurement

The new DTrans T100 RTD probe from Jumo has been developed to meet the needs of users in the food and pharmaceutical sectors. The system is fully encapsulated within the sensor housing to comply with the exacting standards required by these industries. The compact, screw-in device consists of a protection tube with an integrated temperature sensor, a process connection, and an attached housing for the transmitter electronics. Users can choose from a large variety of process connections, such as screw fittings, taper nipples, clamping nipples, weld-in sockets, weld-in ball sockets, Varivent connections or weld-in ball sleeves.

The protection tube is made from stainless steel. With the machinery connector plugged on, the instrument is protected to IP67 in accordance with EN 60 529. The integrated digital two-wire transmitter converts the temperature-dependent resistance value into a current signal. The measurement range and operating parameters are configurable through a set-up program. The 4-20 mA output signal (or reversed: 20-4 mA) is temperature linearised.

The electrical connection is made through a 4-pole M12 machinery connector. Pt100 or Pt1000 temperature sensors in two- or four-wire circuit are used as the sensing devices.

The standard temperature range covered is from -50 to +200°C while a higher temperature version of the probe with an extension piece is also available to measure up to +260°C. A lower temperature version covers the temperature range -50 to +150°C.

The Jumo DTrans T100 RTD probe is approved by the European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group (EHEDG), which is a consortium of equipment manufacturers, food industries, research institutes and public health authorities, founded in 1989 with the aim of promoting hygiene during the processing and packing of food products.
