Radar level measurement breaks the sound barrier

August 2007 Level Measurement & Control

In 1997 Vega introduced its first two-wire radar sensor and two years later the company had become a dominant player in the international market for radar level measurement. By 2003 radar had become widely accepted as a reliable technology for measurement of liquids and in that year Vega introduced the Vegapuls 68 for non-contact, continuous level measurement of bulk solids.

This instrument has proved to be successful in level measurement applications where dust generation, noise, air turbulence, difficult installation and uneven material surfaces prevail. John Groom of Vega Instruments SA says, "Because the Vegapuls 68 is largely unaffected by these process conditions it has proved superior to other level measurement techniques such as capacitive and ultrasonic measurement. An added benefit is its ability to deliver accurate and reliable measurement data while filling is in progress."

Vega has now launched the Vegapuls 67, 'little brother' to the Vegapuls 68. This new model delivers the same reliability in extreme conditions and the same ease of installation as its big brother, but at ultrasonic prices. The technology is common to both models, with the smaller device giving only slightly reduced performance capabilities in terms of measuring distance, temperature and pressure.

The new model is well-suited to bunker and silo applications in which the measuring distance does not exceed 15 metres. It can be applied in all industries where bulk solids are being measured, from mining and aggregates to chemical and food. This non-contact sensor is maintenance-free and can be retrofitted in a silo even when the silo is full.
