Baumer has sound approach to aggressive media

August 2007 Level Measurement & Control

Baumer Electric has created an ultrasonic sensor that has the ability to securely and reliably detect media and objects regardless of their surface characteristics and colour. Because of this ability, these sensors are increasingly being used for level monitoring of granulates, pastes or liquids. Many of these media involve liquids or generate vapours, which, over time, can have a damaging effect on the operation of standard sensors.

In designing the new UNAR family of ultrasonic sensors, Baumer gave special consideration to these application aspects, and made the M18x1 sensor housing from grade1.4435 stainless steel, while the face of the transducer is protected by chemically resistant Parylene coating. This coating forms an excellent barrier against inorganic acids, alkalis and organic solvents, as well as water vapour, which in turns leads to a substantial improvement in process security.

All the sensors in the line possess the proven teach-in function with which a scanning range of up to a maximum of 1000 mm can be programmed. This can be done directly at the sensor by means of a pushbutton, but can also be done externally using a teach-in input. Pots or other mechanical means of adjustment are no longer necessary. Accessories include a 4-character, 7-segment display in the chromium-steel housing with a 4-20 mA input that can be directly activated by the output signal from a current analogue sensor.
