Motor protection system supports multiple protocols

July 2007 Electrical Power & Protection

Schneider Electric South Africa has launched its new TeSys T advanced motor management and protection system intended for the protection and monitoring of single and three phase squirrel cage induction motors rated from 0,4 to 810 A.

The concept of this new system is that of:

* A protection device that is independent of any automation system.

* An operator control unit for reading and modification of monitored parameters.

* A software package for configuration and implementation of motor starters fitted with TeSys T.

Says power control and protection product manager, Zweli Ndlazi: "TeSys T is a full and flexible motor management system: full because of its range of features and flexible because of its optimum adaptability to network protocols."

The motor management functions comprise three sub-functions - control; protection; metering and monitoring. Control functions include pre-defined operating modes, a custom operating mode, local or remote control switching and fault management. Protection functions provide for thermal overload, voltage, current and power protection. Metering and monitoring functions track current, voltage and power measurement, as well as providing statistics and diagnostics and display the motor state.

The system interface supports communication with the PLCs and DCSs, configuration and system installation. The flexible communication allows the protection devices to communicate via common network protocols such as Profibus, Modbus, CanOpen, DeviceNet and Ethernet TCP/IP. Configuration is achieved through connectivity with Magelis HMI, PLC and Powersuite software.

"This solution stands out from its competitors due to its exhaustive functionality, degree of applicability, cost savings and its impressive ease of use. In this regard it is poised to win a leadership position in its market," concludes Ndlazi.
