Sustain exhibition focuses on environmental issues

July 2007 News

With the increased emphasis on environmental protection and the strict enforcement of antipollution legislation, environmental legislation constitutes a growing challenge to the process engineer worldwide.

Addressing this issue is Sustain 2007, incorporating Afriwater, which takes place from 15 to 17 August at the Sandton Convention Centre.

"As modern process industries are faced with ever-increasing competitive pressures and stringent environmental and safety legislation, Sustain 2007 will provide a platform for players in this sector to share information, to network and to form partnerships," says Jo Melville, managing director of show organisers, Exhibitions for Africa.

Today, advanced process control is a key enabling technology in due diligence, social responsibility, the role of ethics, and ensuring a company operates within the legal framework and legal process.

In terms of due diligence various industries have codes of practice in place. For example in the mining industry the control of pollution and environmental conditions are mandated in legal and moral terms.

Control refers to the regulation of all aspects of a process. Precise control of level, temperature, pressure and flow is important in many process applications. Previously the use of control systems meant automation. Today the purpose of automation has shifted from increasing productivity and reducing costs, to broader issues, such as increasing quality and flexibility as well as addressing or adhering to environmental concerns.
