Scalable scada is capable of >1m I/O points

June 2007 SCADA/HMI

Based on the requirements of oil/gas gathering, transportation and distribution industries, Yokogawa's FAST/TOOLS scada is scalable from less than 100 to more than 1 000 000 I/O points, and supports multiple architectures from single node solutions to multinode client/server systems. The majority of the system's installed base is in mission critical applications, especially for oil and gas, nuclear, infrastructure and monitoring industries.

Paulo De Sousa Gomes, systems manager at Yokogawa South Africa says: "The secret of this system's success in critical applications is its reliable design, combined with high performance and on-line configuration capability."

The design is based on open client/server architecture and supports standards such as ODBC and OPC. This allows users to easily integrate extra functionality in addition to the wide range of standard functions.

DCS-like capabilities

Field inputs of the system can be easily organised as unique items based on the software's 'installation', 'unit' and 'tag' name. This allows identical tag names to reside in the same scada database, but with different installation areas, and/or unit areas. Each item can be 'blocked' to disable nuisance alarms when the related field equipment is on maintenance, or can be put 'off-scan' to allow future equipment to be engineered into the scada system without actual scanning of the related field signals.

Industry standard communications

To enhance communication performance, FAST/TOOLS has many dedicated PLC/RTU driver protocols developed for data acquisition. The system can provide direct communication links to various makes of DCS/PLC/RTU on the same scada server. Proven communication interfaces are available through fibre-optics, serial lines, radio, satellite and PSTN. Industry standards such as OPC, XML, ODBC, SOAP and HTML are embedded to connect to third party products. Industrial fieldbusses are supported for process instrumentation communications.

Object-oriented and efficient engineering

The system allows users to easily organise plant equipment (eg, block valves, pumps) as objects with defined properties and characteristics. These defined objects can be easily propagated to the entire wide area plant by assigning unique tag number to each object.

Barge to boardroom scada solution

By combining several of its offerings, Yokogawa can offer a full automation solution comprising its STARDOM network control system (NCS) as the RTU/PLC, ProSafe PLC as the safety system, Exaquantum as the data historians and Foundation Fieldbus instruments. This reduces project implementation risk such as communication interfaces and scope of supply definitions.
