Honeywell supports open system technologies

Honeywell has released an enhanced version of its Field Device Manager (FDM), a key component of the company's plant asset management portfolio. According to Honeywell Field Device Manager R301 is the first system to provide support for the latest Electronic Device Description Language (EDDL) and Field Device Tool (FDT) technologies without requiring conversion tools or add-on devices. The inclusion of native support for both of these standards allows users the broadest choice of instrumentation and valve vendors to integrate with their distributed control and asset management systems.
Open standards such as EDDL and FDT, which are used for the electronic description of the properties of automation system components, are important technologies in the process automation industry. But there is debate about which is the better of these two. By helping customers take advantage of both, Field Device Manager enables more efficient maintenance of system components which in turn reduces the risk of unplanned shutdowns.
Field Device Manager is fully integrated with Honeywell's Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS) automation and control platform. The configurations of many HART devices can be managed, monitored and changed using this interface technology and Profibus devices can be supported through FDT.
