Piping systems that are clean and cost-effective

May 2007 Enclosures, Cabling & Connectors

"GS-Hydro is a leading supplier of non-welded piping technology," says Jeremy Beecroft, marine manager of Hyflo Southern Africa. "The high-quality, fast-connecting, inherently clean and cost-effective piping systems have proved to be a favourite technology with shipbuilding engineers, ship owners and the offshore industry. The systems are approved by all major classification societies.

The three different GS-Hydro piping systems, ranging from 16 to 608 mm, are not only particularly suitable for hydraulic applications, but are also ideal for other applications with high demands on quality, reliability and cleanliness.

Depending on size and pipe system, the different systems allow working pressures of between 10 and 690 bar. The tubing is available in high tensile precision carbon steel, stainless steel as well as copper-nickel, titanium and duplex steel piping according to the customer's requirements.

On-site

The flange-based jointing technology combined with the use of prefabricated piping modules makes assembly and installation fast and easy. On-site bending, flaring and grooving can be minimised by optimising prefabrication. The result is that there need only be adjustments made at site with portable machines. Due to the absence of welding there is no need for either X-raying or postweld cleaning.

Installation

The ease of installation is further enhanced due to the fact that, unlike welded flanges, both GS retain ring and flare flanges rotate thus allowing easy bolt alignment. The detailed GS-Hydro assembly/installation instructions provide additional support for quick installation.

Flushing

The non-welded technology produces an inherently clean piping system, which requires significantly less cleaning/flushing prior to start-up, thus significantly shortening the overall installation time. This fast and easy installation non-welded piping system, combined with the minimised need for flushing/cleaning, leads to greatly reduced overall costs compared to conventional, welded piping systems.

Case studies

Hyflo Southern Africa recently completed GS-Hydro piping system installations for the fishing and offshore diamond mining industry ranging from 16 to 130 mm in diameter at operating pressures of up to 280 bar. Beecroft says that contracts for new installations have since been signed and will be started shortly.
