Two of NewElec's customers recently lost motors due to bearing failures. All too often an excellent motor protection product is selected for the protection of relatively large kW motors that are subsequently lost due to bearing failure. When not identified in time, the rotor begins chaffing on the stator with disastrous consequences and costly lessons.
The NewElec MA relays are equipped with three temperature-sensing circuits to ensure this never happens to the motor. The design of the protection relay allows the user to select one temperature sensing circuit each for the drive end and non-drive end bearings. A small PTC thermistor is then inserted into each bearing housing and connected to the protection relay.
As soon as the selected temperature threshold is reached, the protection relay will disrupt the supply to the motor and provide indication as to which bearing is affected. In this way planned corrective action may be taken so as to prevent a more serious and costly exercise.
The third circuit permits any additional thermistors that could be wired in series and embedded in the motor windings.
The MA range is available with a fully comprehensive protection platform that includes optional communications protocols for suited PLCs.
