Recently upgraded compact geared motors

April 2007 Motion Control & Drives

Nordbloc compact geared motors, available exclusively from Bearing Man's geared motors division, Power Drives, have recently been upgraded by German precision engineers, Getriebebau Nord. They now offer interchangeability, high efficiency, low noise levels, extended service life, fast assembly and reduced maintenance.

"Nord's Unicase geared motor housing - in which all bearing seats are located in a rigid one-piece casting - was patented in 1980 for helical in-line, shaft mount, helical bevel and helical worm gearboxes," says Cliftin Bower, divisional head of Power Drives. "The Unicase design has now been developed to create the Nordbloc drive range, which offers a compact size unit, with increased power density. This design is fully interchangeable with other European brands and provides higher ratios, lower speeds and higher output torques within the compact size of the basic housing."

Easy interchangeability is guaranteed by coaxial input and output shafts and identical mounting dimensions of the double and triple reduction design of these units. There are seven sizes available with foot or flange mounting, which cover the power range of 0,12 to 37 kW with torque capacities of 82 to 3000 Nm.

The new Nordbloc housing, which has a plain and smooth corrosion resistant aluminium die-cast surface, is designed for two and three stage gear units. All gear sizes are ventilated, which increases the service life of shaft seals. The housing has a reduced weight and with the new design, there are no assembly covers or sealing caps.

The innovative design concept of Nordbloc - with staggered bearings, where one bearing is situated in the short IEC adapter and the opposite bearing is in the output shaft - increases bearing life.

Hardened gears ensure smooth and quiet operation at maximum load capacity. To meet the requirements of diverse applications, Nordbloc gearboxes come with reduced backlash as standard.

The modular Nord system, which enables a maximum of variations using a minimum of different type and size components, allows for optimum quality control and short delivery times.

Assembly of Nord geared motors takes place at Bearing Man Park in Johannesburg, in accordance with stringent local and international quality specifications.

A full range of geared motors and accessories is available from Bearing Man's national branch network, which provides technical assistance and a 24 hour support service.
