Globe control valve designed for natural gas

March 2007 Valves, Actuators & Pump Control

Since Spirax Mitech, based in Johannesburg, joined the greater global Spirax-Sarco team, the expansion into the European marketplace has been achieving a quiet, but nonetheless, successful expansion.

Markets, considered outside the general scope of traditional business, are now being opened up in the face of Spirax Mitech's considerable bespoke product design and manufacturing expertise. The latest unique product to leave the shores of South Africa is a highly specialised DN 150 globe control valve, destined for operation off shore and designed to control the pressure of natural gas.

The valve designed to ANSI B16.3, constructed of duplex stainless steel and fitted with Mitech's multilabyrinth disc stack trim is designed to operate up to pressures of 100 bar g (10 MPa g). In addition, it is fitted with a Mitech stainless steel horizontal actuator that is designed to minimise height, therefore consuming less space on the platform, together with being more resistant to external dynamic loads. The actuator includes manual override and is designed to fail close on air supply failure.

The whole system is controlled through a suitably qualified positioner fed with a mA signal providing full modulation of the 50:1 turn down of the valve. The valve is designed to the latest European legislation and so meets the requirements of the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED), in addition to the purchaser's own stringent design and product approvals. These purchase conditions included: product pressure proof tests using nitrogen gas at 65 bar (6,5 MPa); 100% radiographic examination of the main pressure containing parts, in addition to the normal proof and performance testing.

SMC Corporation South Africa Valves, Actuators & Pump Control
Little consideration is generally given to two-port valves because they are often perceived as simple devices that only open and close to control downstream fluid supply.
