C&F Technologies - flowmeters for Africa

March 2007 Flow Measurement & Control

Flowmeters for Africa – that is the aim of this Randburg-based company!

Since its inception in 1995, C&F Technologies has built up a reputation for top-class flow products and a level of service, before, during, and after the sale, that has seen its turnover on an upward trend year after year. Good products are no good without giving the end user exceptional service says the company's technical manager, John Gill, and that is what we try to do, at every stage of the process.

Customer service encompasses everything from initial enquiry to the supply of the equipment, and extends to how we handle any warranty issues should they arise, says Gill. Getting all the correct information from the customer at the enquiry stage can save a lot of complications and aggravation, not to mention money and lost prestige, at a later stage, and getting that information at the outset is sometimes the hardest part of handling the enquiry, comments Gill.

C&F Technologies’ strengths are its many years of experience gained in a wide range of process manufacturing industries, coupled with its total commitment to serve its customers with quality products and after sales service, together with a no-nonsense guarantee. C&F Technologies stock over 3-million rands worth of flowmeters of all types - the intention being to offer the best delivery service available to its end users. "We try to ship some 90% of orders from our local stock holding," says Gill, "and to this end we stock a huge range of complete flowmeters and parts in various materials to be able to assemble flowmeters to suit the majority of applications within a couple of hours. It is of course impossible to stock everything," says Gill, "the range is simply far too extensive to do this, but we certainly try our best, and if we cannot meet a user's needs from stock then we can usually ship from our overseas factory within 2-3 working weeks, and very often within days if the item is on stock at our overseas factory."

"C&F Technologies represent a number of overseas manufacturers," says Gill, "but our major product line is Tecfluid, based in Barcelona, Spain, who manufacture a wide range of flowmetering products and are well known for their extensive range of flow products for liquids and gases utilising the 'variable area' principle of flow measurement." Originally a simple glass tube and float, Gill explains that the VA flowmeter of today is now manufactured in a variety of materials and options to make it suitable for a much wider range of applications, such as those with higher operating pressures and for use in the flow measurement of corrosive liquids and gases. Further enhancements have been the addition of a 4-20 mA transmission signal output and optional Hart communications protocol, as well as alarms, to further aid the monitoring and control of modern manufacturing processes.

The limitation of the VA flowmeter, in general, is its requirement to be installed in vertical lines with upwards flow direction, as well as its limited application on viscous fluids. Of particular interest in this regard is Tecfluid's DP-65 series Target flowmeter, since this can be installed in any flow direction and can handle fluid viscosities as high as 460 centipoise, making it ideal for the measurement of such things as lube oil flows on crusher systems, where the oil is generally contaminated with dust from the crushing process. The DP-65 Target flowmeter requires only 6-pipe diameters of straight pipe for installation and can be supplied with analog and alarm outputs if required.

In addition to its extensive VA meter line, Gill states that Tecfluid also manufacture turbine flowmeters; electro-magnetic flowmeters; oscillating piston flowmeters, by-pass flowmeters; as well as a range of level measurement devices in various materials. "Being the sole distributor for southern Africa, C&F Technologies operates through a number of distributors and re-sellers in South Africa and adjacent countries," says Gill.

In addition to the Tecfluid product range that forms its core business, C&F Technologies also represent a number of specialist manufacturers in the USA, Australia, Korea, Germany and China. These additional products include simple Sight-glass indicators, to the more sophisticated measurement techniques such as vortex flowmeters, thermal mass flowmeters, laminar flow mass flowmeters, oval-gear and spur gear positive displacement flowmeters, and the most recent addition being a portable ultrasonic clamp-on flowmeter from SiteLab that uses state of the art Bluetooth technology to communicate with a handheld PDA. With such an extensive range C&F Technologies have the capability to supply flowmeters for just about any fluid, whether it is a liquid or a gas.
