A specially designed and locally manufactured Spirax-Mitech 12" (30,5 cm) Angle Valve has recently been exported to the UK. The valve is used to test a variety of pumps, the largest of which produces a pressure of 427 bar (42,7 MPa) which the valve must control to atmospheric pressure at a flow rate of almost 2500 m³/hr. To make things just that little bit more complicated, the valve has to control in two distinctly different Cv zones. The first zone is just 11% travel at a Cv of 21 and the second zone is found at 86% travel at a Cv of 172.
The final design has a 12" (30,5 cm) #2 500 x 16" (40,6 cm) #300 WCB Angle body fitted with a bi-linear ED Disk stack. Due to the harsh service the valve is subjected to, it has a very robust cast yoke for the rigorous lifting and slinging the client does on a regular basis.
The customer is going to fit a pneumatic stepping actuator and handwheel. Because this is a pump test valve, shutoff is not important. However, the valve was tested with a manual operator and achieved an ANSI Class V shutoff.
