General-purpose gas analysers used to measure wide range of gases

January 2007 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Horiba's range of general-purpose gas analysers are used to measure a wide variety of gases, including clean gases and stack gases, in such diverse areas as scientific experimentation, industry and global environmental preservation. Specifically, general-purpose gas analysers measure a wide range of gases, including CO, CO2, NOX, SO2, CH4, and O2, as well as THC concentration levels.

These general-purpose, gas analysers also offer a high degree of operational efficiency and functionality. The VIA-510 infrared analyser, the FIA-510 oxygen analyser and the CLA-510SS nitrate oxide analyser are available. Also included, are four types of FIA-510 Series general-purpose hydrocarbon analysers that can be used in conjunction with the ES Series sampling unit for high-grade particle dust and vaporous gases, including stack gases.

The analysers can be used in a wide variety of areas and applications, including monitoring gases affecting the global environment, checking the efficiency of de-nitrification and de-sulphurisation equipment, monitoring stack gases, testing combustion devices, monitoring gases inside heat-treatment furnaces, testing and regularly measuring exhaust emissions generated by internal combustion engines, and monitoring gases in the area of biotechnology.

The analysis device and the sampling device are two separate components. A desktop design and a 19" (48,3 cm) rack provide a wide range of layout choices. Featuring an internal CPU, digital display, one-touch calibration of zero and span, and self-diagnosis, the units offer enhanced ease of use.

Horiba's 510 Series units provide dynamic ranging, with four range and comparison ranges with a maximum of 10x as standard functions. Comparison ranges with a maximum of 20x can be added as an option. Measured concentration output is 0-1 V, 0-10 V, and 4-20 mA (or 0-16 mA) via parallel insulation output and connection to an external unit.

The units achieve repeatability of ±0,5% F.S. (standard range), zero and span drift of ±0,5% per day (standard range), and a high degree of selectivity in measured values.

Horiba is represented locally by OEN Enterprises.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
