Honeywell excels in meeting challenges of integrated mining solutions

January 2007 SCADA/HMI

Honeywell, one of the world's key players in the provision of integrated production control solutions in the mining, metals and minerals processing sector, continues to make an impact with the highly acclaimed Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS) which offers a comprehensive set of features, applications, solutions and services.

The Honeywell Experion system offers mining companies a suite of proven business performance, production, operation, process and asset management applications for users across the entire company, in addition to the collection and storage of information at the mine sites and processing plants.

Siggy Drews, mining, metals and minerals account manager for Honeywell Southern Africa said: "The Honeywell Experion PKS system ensures complete data safety in an environment where more and more companies are operating plant control solutions from open platforms. The Experion PKS prevents any kind of cyber hacking into the system, and to date has been foolproof. This, along with supplying key personnel with online data that they need to make the right business decisions more quickly, makes the PKS system the preferred control solution, particularly in the mining sector where tighter business integration is achieved to provide increased profitability and production."

The key concept of the Experion PKS system is in its integration of people, assets and processes delivering business results while showing reductions in operational costs. It includes a full range of measurement and control products, advanced application solutions, collaborative production management systems, and comprehensive services and support for applications across the mining, metals and minerals sectors.

The Experion platform system includes:

* Experion Controller: the latest and smallest footprint control platform that includes the most comprehensive control algorithms with the best digital field communications.

* Experion HMI: an integrated HMI as well as a platform for integration of third-party controls and PLCs features full functionality and performance from small systems for cement plants to large systems for alumina refineries.

* Facilities and security management: monitoring of key plant processes, accessing company security and monitoring systems, ensuring the safety of your facilities, employees and surrounds.

* Safety management: reliable emergency shut-down facility for essential sectors such as boilers, burners, pressurised vessels.

* Advanced process control: Profit Suite: advanced control applications specifically sector-customised to increase production and reduce consumption of power and raw materials.

* Information management: Honeywell's Business.FLEX manufacturing execution system (MES) applications.

* Simulation and modelling: UniSim simulation software that enhances plant design, what-if analysis, engineer upskilling, operator training and introduces proper response during abnormalities.

Some of the successes of the Honeywell Experion PKS systems have been in large copper mining operations - requirement for a production management system to support additional facilities due to expansion; steel - requirement to enhance performance of one of their blast furnaces following a massive up-grade; aluminium concern - requirement to integrate the control of fire, security and building automation as well as a smelter operation team needing upskilling on new advanced systems.

Honeywell's Experion PKS system was recently selected by the Datong Coal Mine Group, one of Northern China's largest coal producers, in order to increase mine safety and improve operating efficiency of its mining operation, at a contract value of $2,5 million, which includes design, engineering, commissioning, testing and maintenance services.

Drews continued: "Through constant examination and assessment of our clients' needs, we believe we establish a firm partnership between ourselves and our clients and we attack and resolve control solutions issues jointly. Our clients' needs are paramount to Honeywell, and with over 20 years experience in the industry we believe that what we are offering to the South African and African markets is not only the most advanced systems available, but they come with all the technical back-up expertise the entire worldwide group has to offer. The beauty of our systems is that once at the end of the system life cycle, you do not need to install a brand new system - you merely upgrade with the latest Honeywell options - or even better, you keep apace of developments with our Benefits Guardianship Program and Life Cycle Management solutions. There is a reason for our large client-base - quality solutions, professional support and lasting relationships."
