MTS enhances sensors for severe shock and vibration

December 2006 Sensors & Transducers

MTS Sensor Technologie introduces a new option for the R-Series magnetostrictive linear position sensors which is designed for use in extreme shock and vibration environments. These more rugged versions of the R-Series products take advantage of the patent pending electronic housing and sensing element mechanical suspension system first developed for the mobile equipment market in MTS' M-Series mobile hydraulic product line. With one of the industry's highest electromagnetic interference immunity and environmental ingress protection, these new products are ideal for the most severe application environments, such as those found in materials testing, and the production of metal, wood and plastic products.

The standard products are well-known for their durability and immunity to harsh environmental conditions. Using improvements created from long experience, a new industrial platform design and recent developments in the mobile equipment product lines, customers will be able to use the Temposonics R-Series products beyond current industry standards. These enhancements include elevated shock and vibration operation and life, as well as temperature, electromagnetic and other environmental protection, making the sensors ideal for the harshest sawmill, steel rolling mill, die cast and punch press applications.

Already improved over previous designs, the next-generation Temposonics industrial standard R-Series products are capable of continuous operation at external vibration levels of 15 g (10-2000 Hz, IEC standard 68-2-6) and surviving shock levels of 100 g (single hit, IEC standard 68-2-27). Using this new shock- and vibration-resistant design, these products can withstand 30 g (av) vibration without interruption of normal operation. This will simplify sensor installation design for customers making machinery with unusually high shock and vibration behaviour.

Incorporating a unique double-shielded design, all Temposonics R-Series are certified with the industry's highest EMC ratings (Emissions - IEC/EN 50081-1, Immunity - IEC/EN 50082-2 and IEC/EN 61000-4-2/3/4/6, level 3/4 criterion A). Circuitry protection, including polarity to 30 V d.c. (all conductors) and over-voltage to 36 V d.c., help to ensure sensor failure does not occur due to errors in wiring. Visual dual-coloured LEDs serve to minimise troubleshooting effort and downtime that might otherwise be associated with the sensor. For example, the diagnostic LEDs can indicate normal operation, programming mode, magnet not detected, missing external interface signals, and insufficient or out-of-range input power.

The R-Series model RH ('rod style') application housing, capable of hydraulic or pneumatic in-cylinder operation (35 MPa continuous or 70 MPa spike), is also rated for IP67 operation for stroke lengths up to 7,6 m. The RP ('profile style') housing sensor, convenient for mounting to machine surfaces via mounting brackets, is rated for IP65 operation at stroke lengths up to 5 m. Optional polyurethane cables are available in both configurations for increased flexibility and durability at extreme temperatures.

As with the standard R-Series designs, the new high shock and vibration option is also available with environmentally approved accessory housings. These include the ATEX- and UL-approved explosion-proof housing, IP68 high pressure housing (HGH) for use in hazardous locations, the NEMA Type 4X housing for sanitary and wash down environments, and the high pressure isolation tube for 80 MPa continuous pressure operation in stroke lengths up to 7,6 m.
