Pressure Measurement & Control

Adaptable pressure sensors

January 2001 Pressure Measurement & Control

Two new ranges of flush-mounting electronic pressure sensors from IFM Electronic combine the convenience of loop-powered operation with the versatility of IFM's innovative adapt-to-fit construction. This allows the same sensor to be used with a wide range of process fittings.

The new PL and PM sensors provide a standard 4-20 mA analog output and are designed for use with the IFM MO range of process adapters. These make the new sensors compatible with virtually all standard process fittings, including clamp, DIN 11851, IDF, RJT, SMS and Varivent types.

The novel construction of the sensors and adaptors eliminates potential dirt traps, and guarantees suitability for use in hygienic applications, such as food and pharmaceutical manufacture. All sensors in the range are fully certified by the European Hygienic Equipment Design Group (EHEDG) and in the USA by 3A.

PL and PM loop-powered pressure sensors are available in four pressure ranges: 0 to 100 kPa (1 bar), 0 to 250 kPa (2,5 bar), 0 to 1 Mpa (10 bar) and 0 to 2,5 Mpa (25 bar). All models are intended for use with liquid media, including viscous liquids, and liquids containing suspended particles. PL models are suitable for use with media temperatures in the range -25°C to +85°C, while the high-temperature PM models extend the upper limit to +125°C for continuous operation, or +145°C for periods not exceeding an hour.

Like all IFM pressure sensors, the new PL and PM models offer high accuracy - better than 1%, including linearity, zero and span errors and the devices feature good immunity to temperature changes. Deviation in the repeatability of the output signal is less than 0,1% of full range.

The sensor bodies are fabricated from corrosion-resistant type 316 stainless steel, while the sensing element comprises ceramic and PTFE components. Connections are made to the sensors with an industry-standard M12 connector, and they have an IP65 III environmental protection rating.
