Proficy RX PAT solution for the life sciences industry

November 2006 SCADA/HMI

GE Fanuc Automation has announced the next iteration of its comprehensive Process Analytical Technology (PAT) solution for the life sciences industry.

This is according to Daniel Coetzee, manager of GE Industrial's GE Fanuc Automation division for sub-Saharan Africa.

"Proficy RX, based on technology from Symbion Systems, allows for unprecedented production connectivity, data collection and analysis - and provides a solid foundation for companies seeking to better understand and improve their processes," says Coetzee.

According to Coetzee, PAT is a system for designing, analysing and controlling manufacturing through timely measurements of critical quality and performance attributes of raw and in-process materials. The goal of PAT is to ensure final product quality.

"This is a best-in-class solution for life science customers," Coetzee explains.

"As GE Fanuc Automation further develops solutions based on the Symbion technology, we shall be integrating them into the Proficy platform; and thus extending the already robust capabilities of Proficy Historian, with new data models and visualisation tools specifically for the pharmaceutical industry."

The GE Fanuc Automation/Symbion agreement was announced in March 2006 at INTERPHEX. Symbion Systems brings a wealth of knowledge of the process and life sciences industries; and a deep understanding of analytical instrumentation and process analysis software.

"Combined with GE Fanuc Automation's proven automation record, end-to-end solutions that deliver connectivity, quality and productivity, and a large installed base in the life sciences industry, the solution becomes even more powerful," Coetzee predicts.

The Proficy RX solution is aimed at process understanding, including:

* Standardised control and networking of multiple instruments.

* Pre-processing of captured analytical data.

* Robust plant data archiving and repository.

* Extensive methods development.

* Interfaces to commercially-available chemometrics packages.

* Designed for 21 CFR Part 11 compliance.

Coetzee concludes: "The Proficy RX solution provides great flexibility - not only for disparate instrument connectivity - but also for integration with multivariate analysis (MVA) software. In addition, it provides the capability to write and include diagnostics in the MVA code. This is unparalleled in the industry."
