A significant increase in efficiency and productivity per machine

July 2006 Maintenance, Test & Measurement, Calibration

In any given year of production a milling or turning machine is typically only functional for 20% of the time. This is according to Mike Cronin, managing director and owner of Elquip Solutions and South African distributor Lamina Technologies range of milling and turning tools. "We believe that technology from Lamina Technologies provides a way to significantly increase efficiency and productivity.

"The single most important benefit of using Lamina Technologies products is the elimination of idle, or downtime, due to the changing of machine inserts. Some analysts estimate that up to 20% of a machine's total productive time is lost during this process," says Cronin.

"Of course with Lamina Technologies' inserts this becomes irrelevant since the advantage of the Lamina concept is that they are multimaterial inserts," he explains.

"This multimaterial concept is not to be confused with already existing general purpose inserts. With Lamina Technologies products every insert is ideally suited for steel, stainless steel, cast iron and even exotic materials like Inconel and Titanium-based alloys.

Cronin concludes by saying: "This is just the first in a series of significant advantages that stem from using Lamina Technologies' inserts.

These advantages include:

* A significantly reduced range that can still fulfil all the functions that would previously have required hundreds, if not thousands, of different types of inserts.

* The accumulation of obsolete stock is eliminated.

* The inserts are of a high and consistent quality. The inserts cut well, allow for reduction in machine power consumption, have a high level of surface finish and demonstrate consistent characteristics from batch to batch.

* Products will fit the cutters and tool holders that companies already have.
