PREI Instrumentation, representing Calex Electronics, is offering the new Convir OL non-contact fibre-optic temperature sensor. This is designed for use in high temperature applications, where the target is hard-to-reach, in a strong electromagnetic field or in a hazardous area. It offers a temperature range from 650 to 1800°C, with a narrow field of view giving a measurement spot of just 30 mm at a distance of 2 m.
As the fibre-optic cable and sensing head do not contain any electronic parts they can be used in areas where conventional infrared temperature sensors cannot. For example in the strong electromagnetic fields of an induction heating application. The OL can also be used with vacuum equipment to take readings from within vacuum chambers.
With applications involving hazardous areas, up to 15 m of fibre-optic cable can be employed allowing the sensing head of the OL to be mounted near the target in the hazardous zone, and the electronics module to be positioned far away in a safe area.
The short wavelength spectral range of this sensor allows it to measure low emissivity materials, such as metals, with great accuracy. It is also well suited to measuring other high temperature targets such as liquid glass and ceramics.
The OL is also highly configurable, the temperature range, emissivity setting, and response time can all be adjusted using a PC and the AT-301 configuration software to exactly suit each individual application and customer.

Temperature Measurement
For successful paint cure, irrespective of the paint chemistry being used, there is a critical need to measure and control the temperature of the car body as it travels through the oven. Today, paint ovens are controlled in a sophisticated fashion via thermocouples located in each zone to give constant feedback on the ambient temperature.
