'Through-going' gate offers unrestricted flow

May 2006 Valves, Actuators & Pump Control

Dupleix Liquid Meters (DLM) is offering valves that were developed to cater to specific services where conventional valve designs proved to be inadequate. For instance, fluid media with significant solid content is generally difficult to handle with conventional valve designs such as gate, globe, ball, plug or butterfly valves. VAAS knife gate valves are designed to ensure minimum contact between moving parts of the valve. The gate is held between strong layers of gland packing and does not contact the body until it actually seats. The seating is accomplished with a non-sliding motion of the gate towards the body (seat) aided by jams located in the body. Avoiding sliding contact between gate and body permits this valve to handle abrasive particles present in the media more effectively than conventional designs.

DLM recently added a range of O-port valves to the existing range of unidirectional and bi-directional knife gate valves. The O-port knife gate valve features a through-going gate with a circular opening which allows an unrestricted flow path when the valve is open. Media that is in the flow path while the valve is closing is moved inside the valve body and as such will not hinder the movement of the gate and valve closure. The bottom chamber can be provided with flushing ports and/or cover for periodic cleaning of the valve body.

Typical applications of the o-port valve are in handling reject and recycled paper and pulp stock containing media such as pins, staples etc. Conventional knife gate valves may have problems in reliable closure with such media whereas the o-port can handle them well. The metal seat faces can be provided with hard facing or secondary soft seat sealing.

Valves are offered in cast iron, ductile iron or stainless steel body construction with stainless steel gate; other materials are available as specials. Manual, pneumatic or electric actuation is also available.
