ATCA performance in a compact package

May 2006 Enclosures, Cabling & Connectors

Rittal now offers a compact 5U shelf version with its advanced TCA range. Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture (AdvancedTCA) is the first global standard for previously proprietary platforms in the telecommunications sector. Right from the start, Rittal has been actively involved in the development of the ATCA standard (Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture, ATCA), and offers a comprehensive range of products based on it: from complete standard shelves, including backplanes (Full Mesh, Dual Star, and Dual-Dual Star) through variable shelf management to accessories such as front panels and handles. A 5U ATCA shelf variant as an AC version with six horizontal slots at the front is new to the Rittal range. Due to its compact design, the system can be used everywhere high performance is called for at the same time as allowing savings in space, eg, as a test or development system.

The 5U shelf version's design meets the PICMG 3.0 specification. The 19" wide and 400 mm deep shelf with its two pull-out fan units (including filters) guarantees efficient cooling outputs as high as 200 W per slot at the front and 30 W in the RTM area. The unit is completely wired and tested, and equipped with a Dual Star backplane (six slot) and plus Pigeon Point shelf management controller. The new design complies with the RoHS directive.

About Rittal

With more than 10 000 standard products available for immediate delivery, Rittal is one of the world's leading system providers for housing and enclosure technologies. The product spectrum covers the fields of enclosure systems, system climate control, power distribution, IT solutions and communication systems, alongside a variety of unique solutions for electronic packaging. Rittal Electronic Systems offer comprehensive know-how in the field of electronic packaging. Starting from variable sub-rack systems, and progressing via diverse enclosures, operating and visualisation solutions, power supplies and climate control concepts, continuing up to complex microcomputer packaging systems. Fully assembled, ready-wired and tested.

Rittal involves itself from the meeting, via application engineering, development supervision and prototyping, through to monitoring of the final product in use, and the company attaches great importance to a constant exchange with its customers.

With the takeover of the leading manufacturer of CPCI backplanes, Kaparel Corporation, Waterloo, Ontario/Canada, in 2000, Rittal has added another decisive element to its system competence in the field of electronic packaging.

Optimum synergies for the customer are created under the roof of Rittal International, based on close cooperation with market leaders Eplan (European software solutions provider for mechanical engineering and plant construction and industry in general), Lampertz (a prominent supplier in the field of physical data and system security), and Litcos (a provider of innovative security concepts for data systems). In order to serve the world's market places optimally, 19 high-tech production locations supply 60 subsidiaries, 150 sales and logistics centres and more than 70 agencies around the globe. In Germany, 22 Rittal sales and logistics centres cater for customers' needs, with nation-wide service.
