18-path ultrasonic flowmeter

May 2006 Flow Measurement & Control

The FH8500 is a new fiscal and custody transfer 18-path ultrasonic flowmeter designed for oil industry applications like production allocation, FSO and FPSO metering, tanker offloading, crude and refined products pipeline transportation, and storage management.

This flowmeter meets international measurement standards such as OIML Recommendation R117 class 0.3 and API MPMS 5.8 (measurement of Liquid Hydrocarbons by Ultrasonic Flow Meters Using Transit Time Technology), with a rangeability over 10:1, over a viscosity range of 0,1 to 500 cSt. Accuracy is specified at 0,15% with repeatability to 0,025%.

The 18 paths used to monitor flow rates, from 12 non-intrusive, site replaceable transmitter sensors, have been shown to allow computation of total flow independent of velocity profile effects such as swirl and asymmetric flow. Available for pipes from DN 100 to 450 initially, the units are approved for installation in Zone 1 Division 1 Groups C and D. The unit has a low installation and ownership cost.

The FH8300 Series sensor tube is available as either a single, double or triple beam unit, giving increased accuracy and independence to flow profile variations. These units offer a suitable solution for accurate flow measurement of all liquids in chemical and petrochemical processing plants, regardless of duty and velocity profile.

The meter is easily installed using a factory calibrated pipe section. There is no flow obstruction, and no pressure drop introduced. With a wide choice of flow tube materials, the meters have no moving parts, seals, bellows or elastomers - the transducers are removable even under line pressure, although the unit does not need any maintenance. Advanced processing electronics provides a window onto the process itself - RS48S/Modbus/HART protocols allow simple connection to any DCS.
