Imrey's Marsh Mill Dryers plant in Devon, UK, produces 260 000 tonnes of china clay each year. The Marsh Mill plant, which uses up to 60 litres of water every second, is responsible for returning water to the River Plym and it is essential that treatment follows strict environmental guidelines. Failure to do so results in heavy fines imposed by the Environmental Agency.
To help Marsh Mill to adhere to these guidelines it was decided that a key part of the treatment process, the monitoring of the effluent tanks, should be automated. Visual monitoring by staff has previously allowed over pumping and there was a continued risk of human error. One MSL600 is now mounted on each tank, giving the control room accurate reading of the levels, which enables them to optimise the pumping operation, meet the requirements of the water discharge licence and avoid any costly or damaging incidents.
The MSL600 is well suited to this application. A bridge-mounted control unit, connected to an ultrasonic transducer mounted below the surface of the water, provides a direct 0/4-20 mA output proportional to the sludge blanket level, accurate to within 35 mm.
The instrument's self-cleaning function is of particular importance for this application, where clay particles could soon coat the sensor. Compressed air jets generated within the control unit are used to clean the surface of the transducer at programmable intervals to clear away the clay and maintain optimum efficiency.
