Dust explosions can occur in any location where dust is in suspension in large quantities. This is particularly so in wood processing plants and grain mills where dust is a fact of life, which can pose a severe hazard.
Gerry Bryant, managing director of Countapulse Controls, says that fine dust is an unavoidable by-product of sawing, drilling, milling or chipping, it is necessary to monitor the proper functioning of extraction systems in potentially explosive areas.
A flow sensor that is eminently capable of this task is the EGE STS series flow sensor from EGE technologies. It is ATEX approved according to the latest regulations and is intrinsically safe. The accompanying switching amplifier is mounted in a switching cabinet at a safe distance of up to 300 metres from the sensor. Suitable for use in ambient temperatures of up to 60°C, this sensor can be mounted in pipes and exhaust shafts. Certified to IP67, the sensor is also available with a universal M12 plug system.

Editor's Choice Flow Measurement & Control
There are many processes where it is undesirable for the load to suddenly change quickly, for example in the paper industry. Examples of level control have involved reasonably fast tuning. An example of a level loop tuned this way and responding to a step change in setpoint is given.
