Compact visible laser sensors

January 2006 Sensors & Transducers

The World-beam QS18LD Laser Diffuse and QS18LLP Laser Retro reflective sensors from Banner Engineering deliver high-performance sensing with visible Class 1 lasers. Their tightly collimated sensing beams result in extended sensing ranges. Both models use the company's compact World-beam QS18 standard housing for mounting and application flexibility. The QS18LD senses targets up to 300 mm away. The QS18LLP delivers reliable retro reflective sensing up to 10 m.

"As the smallest, most cost-effective models in Banner's extensive laser sensor product offering, the QS18LD and QS18LLP offer tremendous application flexibility when laser sensing power and accuracy are required in a confined location," said Chris Dales, Research and Development Product Planning manager for Banner Engineering. "Their visible Class 1 lasers deliver an extremely small effective beam for excellent optical performance throughout the entire sensing range - even long distances."

A great fit when high power and small beam size are important, these devices are suitable for a wide range of applications in pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic, semiconductor, material handling and packaging -industries. Examples include:

* Detecting small transitions in a position control application.

* Verifying the presence and location of small holes in a drilling or stamping application.

* Sensing small parts in a conveyance application.

* Detecting features in an inspection application.

Features making these sensors particularly easy to install and use include:

* Retro-reflective models polarise emitted light and filter out any unwanted reflections when detecting shiny objects.

* Crosstalk rejection algorithm protects against optical disturbance from adjacent sensors.

* Single-turn potentiometer on the back of sensor models allows user adjustment.

* Bright green and amber status LEDs are visible from 360°.

* Compact housing has popular 18 mm threaded barrel and two side-mount holes.

* An extensive offering of versatile mounting brackets is available.

* Six connector options are available: 2 m or 9 m integral cable; 4-pin Euro-style or integral pigtail QD; and 4-pin Pico-style or integral pigtail QD.

The QS18 laser sensors operates on 10 to 30 V d.c. and features complementary solid-state outputs: current sourcing (PNP) or current sinking (NPN) depending on model.

A family of easy-to-use vision sensors. World-beam series sensors from Banner deliver a universal solution for sensor users who demand a wide range of available sensing modes. They are easy-to-apply, easy-to-use sensors that resist environmental contamination from moisture, dirt, EMI/RFI and crosstalk.
