Pressure Measurement & Control

Smart concentration/density transmitter

November 2005 Pressure Measurement & Control

The Smar DT301 density and concentration transmitter uses the principle of differential pressure measurement between two points, separated by a known, constant distance and may be used in tanks or in pipelines. Powered by a 4 to 20 mA current loop the unit can offer local or remote indication of density or concentration values, in user units, continuously.

For plants relying on manual lab sampling for density measurement or see too much variability in product quality, the DT301 is a smart digital multivariable density transmitter for continuous measurement of density or concentration of liquids.

The device offers advantages over other types of density transmitters. Accurate within 0,03% (compared to the 0,1 to 0,5% that is typical for other technologies) allows the user to maintain a more uniform product quality, often also reducing additive and energy consumption. Other advantages include easier mechanical installation since it is a single integrated unit. Wiring is also easier as it is two-wire loop powered requiring no auxiliary supply. Unlike nuclear density transmitters DT301 require no special permits or handling. Inferred density measurements using pressure transmitters either had problems with build-up on the sensing diaphragm or the user had to deal with the installation of diaphragm seals with unwieldy capillaries. Most often two pressure transmitters have to be used. This contrasts with the easy installation of the DT301 probe.

The transmitter mounts using standard flanges. It is available in an industrial type, or a sanitary version developed especially for the food and beverage and pharmaceutical industries.

The DT301's versatility allows the use of the measurement unit most applicable for the process. The transmitter's indication may be read in density units (g/cm3, kg/m3), relative density (@20°C, @4°C) or concentration (Baum‚, Plato, Brix, INPM degree). Changing from one measurement unit to another does not require transmitter recalibration.

Some of the most frequent applications are: Chemicals and petrochemicals, oil refineries, sugar plants and alcohol distilleries, food industries, beverage industries, paper industries.

The DT301 communicates using the industry standard HART protocol and is available in Foundation Fieldbus and Profibus-PA versions joining the already extensive portfolio of certified devices from Smar.
