Turbine flowmeters for gas

November 2005 Flow Measurement & Control

Gas is arguably one of the most important energy resources in today's - and particularly tomorrow's - world. In the gas industry, flowmeters are known as reliable and robust field instruments. The dependability and efficiency of flowmeters have become vitally important to the gas end users.

Kromschröder is a leading manufacturer of top products and systems for measurement and control of gases, for automation of industrial furnaces and for the control of heat treatment processes. Kromschröder provides a wide range of spares and instruments - one of which is the turbine flowmeter.

Turbine flowmeters are used specifically for the measuring of gas and air quantities and the flow throughput. Typical applications include secondary measurement of the consumption in industrial installations, laboratories and test stands. They are frequently used in the burner industry for the setting up of burners, permitting the end user to optimise energy usage and monitor gas consumption.

The flowmeters are available in a number of sizes, ranging from a 1" up to a 6". (The 1" has a minimum flow range of 1,6 m3/h and a maximum range of 16 m3/h, were as the 6" has a minimum flow range of 80 m3/h and a maximum range of 1600 m3/h.) Turbine flowmeters are PLC compatible, which allows the information to be transmitted to PLC, providing the information on a level 2 display.

These flowmeters have been installed by The Combustion Group's Service Department on all 12 furnaces at Hillside Aluminium in Richards Bay, headed by service manager, Quentin Korff. This has improved the furnace efficiency and provided Hillside with the opportunity to monitor its gas usage.
