A paper and pulp mill in NSW Australia had a requirement for paper fibre sludge level monitoring on a 4 m deep settling tank. The customer needed to know when a ballooning of the paper fibre blanket occurred. This phenomenon would happen over a long period of time (hours) and was preventable if an alarm was raised early enough. If the balloon blanket was not detected early enough, the customer had to spend several days watering down the fibre blanket and floc. An instrument was already installed but not working when the Solartron Mobrey MSL600 was recommended for trial. The existing unit was one of two sludge blanket monitors that had not provided reliable performance.
The MSL600 sludge blanket monitor was installed on the 4 m deep fixed bridge clarifier. This was a rather different application for the MSL600 and initially the 'industrial' algorithm was selected. Under the industrial setting the unit initially worked, but provided false blanket levels due to the threshold levels being fixed in value.
Once the unit was reprogrammed to Municipal Waste settings, the readings were much smoother and more accurate. After six months of suitable operation, during which time the unique air-blast transducer cleaning system proved ideal, the customer is now purchasing a second unit for the rotating bridge clarifier. This unit will encompass the MSL601 slave controller with radio link.
