Thermal camera covers broad temperature range

July 2005 Temperature Measurement

In May this year Protea Automation Solutions staged a technical demonstration of its new Cyclops TI 814 Portable Thermal Imager for the Zambian branch of the SAIMC.

The instrument is a high specification thermal camera with a 320 x 240 detector that captures high-resolution thermal images within the temperature range -20 to 500°C. An extended temperature range of -20 to 1500°C can be specified as an option when fitted with a detachable telephoto lens.

The portable thermal imaging camera instrument can identify and quantify thermally related problems around the plant (like faults in electrical panels, etc). It is ergonomically designed, light, compact and easy to use. It also features simplified controls and offers simultaneous display of the thermal image in both the bright LCD display and colour viewfinder. The camera is powered by a standard rechargeable camcorder battery, making it capable of more than three hours of continuous operation.

Thermal images and sound files are saved to a compact flash memory card then typically transferred to a PC for image manipulation, analysis and report writing. To complete the system, the Cyclops TI 814 is supplied with LIPS 814 image processing software, a software product that has been progressively refined throughout fifteen years of developing and supplying thermal imaging systems for predictive and preventive maintenance.

In addition to plant condition monitoring, the Cyclops TI 814 can be used to gather and analyse temperature data for structural integrity inspections, quality control, and research and development. Other features include a laser pointer, motorised focus and live wireless video transmission to remote monitors.

The camera is suitable for use in industries such as steel, glass, petrochemical, plastics, electrical, electronics, electrical power generation, transmission and distribution, energy management, construction and civil engineering.
